The Linville Caverns have a rich history. They were first discovered in the 1800s when some fishermen spotted fish swimming from what appeared to be solid rock. This solid rock turned out to be Linville Caverns – an underground wonderland that has since become a nature lover’s destination and local treasure.

Anglers who visit the area will not be disappointed. Fly fishing is a popular area activity. Just make sure you know the rules. Even though most area trout streams can be fished year round, the Hatchery Supported streams are closed during March. The region also has designated wild trout waters, catch and release and delayed harvest areas. As a result, it’s a good idea to talk to a local fly fishing guide or visit a local fly fishing shop to learn more about the fly fishing rules, regulations and type of fishing license required. A fine from the game warden is not a great vacation souvenir.

Grandfather Mountain is all at once, rugged, yet welcoming. It’s also one of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains topping out at nearly 6,000 feet. Hands-down, it’s one of the most beautiful landscapes in North Carolina.
